I have Danced before a Tree with a bone whistle in my mouth.
I have felt the sun beating down on me and slept outside three nights.
My body remembered the hunger of my youth and my throat felt the thirst of summer heat.
Mother Nature whispered to me the coming of the rain and I smiled.
The morning dew offered me its cooling gift and I was glad.
The Moon Mothers brought warm sweet tea at night and it was nectar of the gods!
I moved to the beat of the drum; my feet tapping the Earth, my hands tapping the Tree.
I sent my love to the Sky, I sent my love to the Earth.
I walk with less fear now for I have Danced before a Tree with a bone whistle in my mouth.
Some of you may be familiar with a Sun Dance - a Lakota ritual where young men tether themselves to a tree with hooks and swing or dance and tug until the hooks pull free. It's done as a gift for the people - a willing sacrifice of self for the benefit of all.

I participated in a Sun-Moon Dance this past summer - there's no hooks. One dances to and from a tree for three days while fasting from food and water. It's not a bad as it sounds - you get 16-ish ounces of warm tea each night and wet towels are handed out that one can use to cool off and suck on if you need to. You're also not dancing constantly - you're chilling in your tarp lean-to more than anything - so one sleeps a lot. We you are dancing, you blow a little bone whistle.
It's a truly wonderful experience that really can't be described. It's something that hits you more afterwards than during and you feel all the more empowered because of it. It's a gift and I can't wait to do it again. :)

:D This is fantastic. I was thinking of giving you a critique(ish), but all I can say is this is fantastic. Because it is. And I love your artist comment, as well.

I almost regret missing my chance to participate with this. Perhaps another year I can "indulge" in what is offered.

Cool poem, by the way; that must've been sitting with you for some time.

You can certainly give it a try this year :)

I'm sure the poem *was* sitting there for a while but it only bubbled up a couple hours before I typed it.
